Today marks a major milestone for Kellas. It is 10 years since we became both the owner and operator of the Central Area Transmission System (CATS). Comprising an offshore riser platform, 404km pipeline, and gas processing terminal on Teesside, CATS transports and processes around a quarter of all UK-produced gas.
It is an essential and enduring part of the UK’s energy infrastructure, consistently delivering natural gas that heats millions of homes and fuels industries across the country. The volume of gas it processed last year alone could heat over five million homes – the equivalent of the UK’s five largest cities combined – and would fill more than three million Olympic-sized swimming pools.
Over the past decade – supported by our valued partners and investors – we have modernised the system, strengthened its resilience, tackled complex technical challenges, and executed major maintenance and integrity programmes. As our industry faces policy and market uncertainty, the role CATS plays remains fundamental to the UK’s energy security and resilience.
Nathan Morgan, Kellas CEO, said: "Moving forward, we remain committed to operating CATS safely, reliably and sustainably, and to continuing to invest in this nationally significant asset so that it stays robust and relevant in a changing energy landscape. We thank our partners, customers, investors, and the dedicated Kellas team for their contribution over the past decade and look forward to the next chapter in the CATS journey."
