Celebrating five years of Kellas scholarships at Teesside University

For five years Kellas has been proudly partnering with Teesside University through our Clean Energy Scholarship Programme that brings together talent, opportunity and industry ambition. Set up in 2022 to support aspiring engineers and clean energy professionals, 12 students have so far received support across undergraduate BEng and postgraduate MSc energy engineering courses, and our commitment will see further scholarships granted through to 2028.

Scholarships have lasting impact. For students, they greatly reduce financial barriers to learning, allowing them to focus on their studies and personal development. For the university, they attract talented and ambitious students from diverse backgrounds, helping them go on to make meaningful contributions in their professional fields. And for Kellas, they are a direct investment in future engineers who can help drive the UK’s energy transition.

Teesside itself is a region poised to play a key role in the transition. At the forefront of the UK’s industrial decarbonisation ambitions, it offers an inspiring environment for students to develop the skills, knowledge and experience needed to embrace the challenges of a rapidly evolving energy sector.

Alan Murray, Chief Operating Officer at Kellas Midstream, said: “Education is one of our Corporate Social Responsibility commitments, and by working with Teesside University we are privileged to support the next generation of engineers heading for careers in energy. We enjoy getting to know our scholarship recipients each year, seeing their enthusiasm for engineering and finding out about their ambitions for the future. Over the past five years we have built a close working relationship with the University, and being a small part of its growth and success story is a proud achievement for Kellas.”

Joanne Bulmer, Donor Relations Officer at Teesside University, said: “Over the past five years, Kellas’ generous support has made a meaningful difference to our students, helping them pursue their studies with greater confidence and fewer financial barriers, and with further scholarship intakes planned, the programme will continue to create valuable opportunities for further cohorts of students.”

Beyond scholarships, our partnership with the University has grown to include further opportunities for students, including site visits to our CATS gas facility on Teesside, talks with engineering classes, and work placements that provide valuable industry experience. In 2026, for the second year running, we are supporting the University’s Women in Engineering residential. This initiative gives school-aged girls the chance to experience engineering first-hand through practical activities, workshops, and interactions with industry professionals, and see for themselves the wide range of careers available in engineering.

“Teesside University is one of only a few providing dedicated energy sector courses, with the significant advantage of offering Kellas scholarships. Their support has made a huge difference financially to my studies, as well as giving me the opportunity to visit the CATS terminal to see energy infrastructure first-hand.”
Elizabeth, 3rd year BEng student

“I like the group work where we collaborate and share ideas, working to each other’s strengths. I am enjoying the clean energy and sustainability module which has introduced us to all types of energy including hydrogen, carbon capture, geothermal, wind, solar, biomass and tidal.”
George, 1st year BEng student

“I come from a non-engineering background but have the right experience and transferable skills for the MSc course. I can see how what I’m learning could be applied to the food industry I was working in, such as carbon capture and storage.”
