Grant Shapps MP visits CATS on Teesside to discuss UK energy security

Kellas Midstream had the honour of welcoming The Rt Hon Grant Shapps MP, Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, to its CATS (Central Area Transmission System) gas processing terminal on Teesside on 1 August 2023, to discuss UK energy security and domestic gas supply.

The CATS terminal, operated in partnership with Wood, handles around a quarter of the UK’s gas production and provides a critical role in supplying UK domestic gas.

Mr Shapps’ visit was hosted by Alan Murray, Kellas’ Chief Operating Officer, and Craig Wreglesworth, Wood CATS Operations & Maintenance Manager, and he also met some of the workforce responsible for ensuring the facility runs safely and reliably, finding out about what is being done at site to reduce emissions and support the UK’s transition to net zero.

Alan said, “Our industry plays an essential role in driving the UK transition to cleaner energy. We were delighted to show Mr Shapps around the terminal and talk about our role in providing UK energy security and discuss our exciting plans to build new low carbon infrastructure.”

Based in Aberdeen, Kellas Midstream is an independent energy infrastructure company that owns, manages, and operates a portfolio of critical energy infrastructure assets in the Central and Southern North Sea. In addition to CATS, the Kellas portfolio includes the Esmond Transportation System (ETS) in Norfolk and the Humber Gathering System (HGS) in East Yorkshire.

Kellas is also developing gigawatt-scale low carbon hydrogen production facilities on Teesside that will contribute significantly to the UK’s target hydrogen production capacity by 2030.

Alan commented, “We recognize and support the need to accelerate UK clean energy production. Our low carbon hydrogen projects will be developed through innovation, strong partnerships and investment, bringing significant economic benefits and employment opportunities to the Tees Valley and Northeast of England.”
